Mortality according to CURB-65

CURB-65 criteria of severe pneumonia
  • • Confusion (abbreviated mental test score < 8/10)
    • Urea > 7 mmol/L
    • Respiratory rate = 30 / min
    • BP: systolic < 90 or diastolic < 60 mmHg
    • age > 65 years

The risk of death at 30 days increases as the score increases:
  • 0—0.6%
  • 1—3.2%
  • 2—13.0%
  • 3—17.0%
  • 4—41.5%
  • 5—57.0%

There are numerous predictors of increased severity and risk of death from community acquired pneumonia including white cell count < 4 or > 20, co-morbidity such as renal disease, multi-lobar involvement on CXR and temperature < 35°C or > 40°C
